I am thrilled to be teaching the full 10-week Graphic Novel and Illustration class, this fall again at the Palo Alto Art Center. The class runs from Sept.13 to Nov. 15, Tuesday nights, 7 to 9:30 PM. Registration opened on August 18 for Palo Alto residents. Non-residents can register starting on Aug. 25. This a class for adults (16 years and older). Great class for beginners as well as experienced artists.

Visual Storytelling: Graphic novel, Illustration and more.

Do you want to create images that tell a story? Do you have a story to tell, but want to add a visual element? This class offers a great introduction to the art of visual storytelling and its various forms: graphic novels, comics, illustration, children books, travel diaries, etc. Warm-up drawing and writing exercises, practical introduction to narrative art techniques, and exploration with a variety of media will allow students to develop their own way of telling stories with pictures. Topics covered in this 10-week class include, storyboarding and thumbailing, character design, picture composition (perspective, camera angles and shots), page layout, penciling, inking, coloring, and more. In the last classes, we will review different ways for students to share or publish their work, on paper or on line. Students can choose to work with traditional or digital tools and are welcomed to bring their laptop and graphic tablets to class. This is a great class for art beginners as well as experienced artists.

Pas de poissons d’avril à l’école !

(Une reprise d’une histoire publiée en 2014…)

Ce n’est pas qu’au Québec que le 1er avril est un jour dédié aux blagues, farces et attrapes de toutes sortes. Mais en Italie, en France, en Belgique, dans certaines régions de la Suisse et au Québec ce jour se passe sous le thème du poisson. Une blague simple, mais populaire consiste à accrocher subrepticement un poisson de papier dans le dos d’une personne. Lorsqu’elle s’en rend compte, on crie alors « Poisson d’avril ! »Tout le monde devient facilement complice à ce jeu et la victime peut parfois se promener bien longtemps avec ce poisson dans le dos avant de s’en rendre compte.

La coutume est très populaire auprès des écoliers qui adorent attraper leur enseignant. Il n’y a rien de plus drôle, n’est-ce pas, que de se moquer de l’autorité ?

Pourquoi ce préambule ?

D’abord, parce que j’habite aux États-Unis (USA) et qu’ici, si on adore faire des blagues le 1er avril (April Fools’ Day), la tradition du poisson attaché dans le dos est inconnue.

Deuxièmement, parce que la planche que je publie aujourd’hui a pour thème le fameux poisson de papier.

Les histoires de ma série « Histoires d’escaliers » ont pour cadre le Québec de la fin des années 50. À cette époque, les écoles publiques sont confessionnelles, catholiques pour les francophones. Les religieuses sont en général très strictes sur le respect qui leur est dû et sur le sérieux de leur école. Le 1er d’avril est un jour redoutable pour elles à cet égard. C’est pourquoi, à l’école de Doudou et Danny, il y a interdiction formelle, aujourd’hui, de jouer des tours, comme d’accrocher des poissons de papier dans le dos de qui que ce soit !

Mais il y a dans leur école ce tout petit poète. Un enfant au coeur tendre, à la tête remplie d’imagination. Ce n’est pas un rebelle, c’est un rêveur qui ne peut pas imaginer qu’on puisse interdire de s’amuser. Et c’est pour cette raison que cette consigne du 1er avril, il la prend au pied de la lettre : « Pas de poissons d’avril, à l’école ! »

Visual Storytelling: The Illustrated Journal

Keeping an illustrated journal at home or while traveling.

I developed a new class for this spring, in the Visual Storytelling series: The Illustrated Journal. Students can choose to take the class on Saturday morning or Tuesday night. We meet for six weeks.

Registration starts today, March 3, 2016 for Palo Alto residents and March 10 for non-residents:

Class description:

In this class students will create an illustrated journal. This can take the form of a travel sketchbook, personal diary, graphic memoir, professional notebook or project story board. Additionally, we will explore the option of an illustrated digital journal on a phone or tablet using the most popular apps. We will focus on how to successfully integrate the visual and narrative aspects of an illustrated journal and ultimately tell a great story. Make the most of your journal, travel sketchbook, personal or professional diary, or project notebook!

Where: Palo Alto Art Center, 1313 Newell Road, Palo Alto, CA.

When: April 9 to May 7, 2016. Saturdays 10 am to 12:30 pm or April 12 to May 10, Tuesdays, 7 to 9:30 pm.

The Birthday Girl is Sick!

The birthday girl is sick.

I have been sick for the last two weeks. Sinus infection, ear infection and some problems with my right lung. My symptoms? I have a terrible runny nose, I spit, I cough, and I am almost deaf. Luckily, I have no visitors and I can walk around the house in my pajamas, with my box of tissues and my throat losanges.

Today is my birthday. I don’t want to say my age. It’s enough to say that I am not 20 years old anymore and neither is my youngest child. I live far away from my family and friends, so I like to know that they don’t forget me. Especially today.

A few years ago, I used to receive birthday cards and birthday phone calls. I loved it. Of course these days,  it’s even better. There is Facetime, Google video, Skype, etc. Even if we live far away from the people we love, we can still talk to them like if they were in our living room. It’s great to be able to see each other.

This is why, I would like to say to all my friends who were extremely nice to call me this morning to wish me Happy Birthday and who got this image on their screen:

I would like you know that I finally took a shower, and I washed and brushed my hair. I put on nice clothes and some jewelry. I even put on make-up.
